The modern Sonic levels, which are more of what gamers have become accustomed to seeing, utilize Sonic’s homing attack, light dash and a new boost that, like the spin-dash for classic Sonic, allows for a more high-speed experience. The spin-dash move has been amped up this time around and Sonic can blaze through levels faster than ever. The classic Sonic levels are your classic side-scrolling adventures and the controls translate nicely from the Genesis to the current-gen consoles. The voice acting is very good and the dialogue/interactions between the characters is funny most of the time (jokes about Classic Sonic’s weight or hair become a bit repetitive).Įach of the games various stages has two acts, one for classic Sonic and one for modern Sonic.
The classic sonic tunes have been tweaked (only slightly), joining the more modern, vocal-heavy Sonic themes (City Escape is one of my favorites in the series). Sonic games are not generally known for their graphics, but if you take a break from speeding through the levels, you will see famous Sonic locations in all of their 3D glory. The vibrant colors and expansive backdrops are really something to marvel at. Graphically, Sonic Generations is incredible. The references to chili cheese dogs and Tails’ fear of the water in Chemical Plant serve as the perfect homage to the Sonic Series. It’s not just the classic soundtrack or levels that instill that familiar feeling in gamers. Generations is the perfect tribute to Sonic and there are moments that will instantly trigger memories for anyone who has played a Sonic game in the past.
The first thing that hits you when you pop Sonic Generations into your gaming console of choice, is the nostalgia.
